Dr. W. Tracy Hankins discusses the benefits of breast implant upgrade and revision procedures, clarifying the typical reasons patients may seek out these treatments.
Las Vegas, NV — Dr. W. Tracy Hankins, a plastic surgeon in Las Vegas, reveals that a patient’s desire for breast revision does not necessarily signify that something went wrong during the initial procedure. In many cases, he explains, her preferences have changed since the first operation, and she may now desire a larger or smaller size, or a different type of breast implant altogether. Dr. Hankins suggests that the reason for upgrading breast implants or revising a previous breast augmentation is as individual as the woman considering the surgery.
Dr. Hankins indicates there are medical reasons for undergoing breast revision surgery; however, he says that many women are simply seeking to improve the aesthetics of their breasts by exchanging their implants with a different size, shape, or type. If an individual is unhappy with her breast augmentation for any reason at any point after the initial surgery, he believes she should discuss her concerns with a board certified plastic surgeon to determine if breast revision may be able to help. Some reasons for considering revision breast augmentation surgery include:
- Desire for larger or smaller implants
- Desire to exchange saline with silicone
- Asymmetry
- Complications after a previous procedure, such as capsular contracture (scar tissue forming around the implant) or implant rupture
- Expiration of implant warranty (some patients may benefit from replacement of breast implants after a certain number of years)
In addition to silicone and saline breast implants, Dr. Hankins indicates that there are round and shaped, smooth and textured, and many other types of implants from which to choose. As a result, he says many women can achieve more cosmetically appealing results by switching to a different implant model.
Ultimately, Dr. Hankins believes that women should not have to settle for breast implants that are less than ideal. In the event the initial breast augmentation did not produce the desired outcome, he says patients may wish to consider breast revision surgery to achieve the shape, size, and texture they want most.
