Las Vegas, NV — Board-certified plastic surgeons Drs. W. Tracy Hankins and Samuel Sohn say their Las Vegas plastic surgery practice has seen a dramatic increase in male cosmetic treatments and procedures, adding that roughly 10-20% of their current patients are now men. “The most common procedures performed on males in our office are liposuction, facelift and eyelid surgeries, breast reduction, and nasal contouring,” says Dr. Sohn. “In addition, there are a fair number of men pursuing nonsurgical rejuvenation via BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport, and other injectable fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm.”
In regards to why he believes more men are choosing to receive treatments, Dr. Sohn says, “At a certain point, good nutrition, a healthy lifestyle, exercise, and avoidance of sun and tobacco can only take one so far. Sometimes, men undergo surgery to remain competitive in whatever field they’re in. Also, looking good to attract women or to look good for one’s spouse may be another reason why men may pursue a procedure.” He adds that certain options such as BOTOX® Cosmetic and other injectable fillers seem to be popular among men as they offer virtually instantaneous benefits that can improve confidence and self-esteem with very little downtime and risk.
A major issue the Las Vegas plastic surgeons address with many of their male patients is the worry that results will be noticeable. Dr. Sohn says they take pride in providing natural results with a refreshed appearance, as well as smoother and tighter contour without going to excess. “In general, male plastic surgery involves many of the same basic techniques as those for females, but with certain small changes in incision lines or the way that we contour the body to ensure a more masculine appearance. We don’t want male patients becoming feminized by having a surgical procedure. This can be apparent in both body contouring with liposuction, as well as facelifts, for example.”
No matter what the procedure, Dr. Sohn says recovery times can be affected by a number of variables: “The downtime after surgery for men is the same as for women and depends on the procedure performed. Each individual is unique, and the amount of downtime necessary can vary depending on medical condition, occupation, as well as number and types of procedures performed.” Additionally, Dr. Hankins says patients should also consult with a board-certified surgeon as qualified surgeons have the extensive training and experience necessary to properly assist patients through the recovery process and achieve the most effective results.
